Obama Administration in Brazil from Wall Street Journal Underwrites Offshore Drilling
You read that headline correctly. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is financing oil exploration off Brazil. But look on the bright side. If President Obama has embraced offshore drilling in Brazil, why not in the old U.S.A.? The land of the sorta free and the home of the heavily indebted has enormous offshore oil deposits, and last year ahead of the November elections, with gasoline at $4 a gallon, Congress let a ban on offshore drilling expire.
The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil’s Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan. The U.S. Export-Import Bank tells us it has issued a “preliminary commitment” letter to Petrobras in the amount of $2 billion and has discussed with Brazil the possibility of increasing that amount. Ex-Im Bank says it has not decided whether the money will come in the form of a direct loan or loan guarantees. Either way, this corporate foreign aid may strike some readers as odd, given that the U.S. Treasury seems desperate for cash and Petrobras is one of the largest corporations in the Americas.
Which ‘National Network of Community-Based Organizations’ Will Health-Care Bill Fund to Monitor Your Diet and Weight? from CNS News
The health care reform bill approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) would provide federal grants to state and local governments and a “national network of community-based organizations” to “promote healthy living and reduce disparities” and to monitor people’s weight, eating, exercise habits and other individual behaviors that affect health at the community level. The language instituting the program, entitled “Community Transformation Grants,” is on pages 382-387 of the bill as posted on the committee’s Web site. The bill states that only three types of entities will be eligible to receive grants under the program: “a–(A) State government agency; (B) local government agency; or (C) national network of community-based organizations.”
Axelrod’s profits: Uh, who’s on the take from the drug lobby again?!?! from Michelle Malkin
I’ve reported several times over the last few months on Team Obama’s hefty funding from the health care industry/drug lobby — see here and here — as well on the deep pockets behind the Astroturf HCAN/SEIU/ACORN campaign. Culture of Corruption also homes in on the cozy cash deals involving Michelle Obama, Valerie Jarrett, Susan Sher, and David Axelrod to create faux grass-roots support for the University of Chicago Medical Center’s patient-dumping scheme. Now, Bloomberg’s Timothy Burger brings news about Axelrod’s latest health care conflicts of interest that will come as no surprise to those who have fully informed themselves of the Chicago way. While White House press secretary Robert Gibbs assails the motives of grass-roots activists by falsely smearing the movement as corporate-funded shills, Barack Obama’s own senior adviser and chief Astroturfer raked in millions of dollars from Big Pharma.
- Two firms that received $343.3 million to handle advertising for Barack Obama’s White House run last year have profited from his top priority as president by taking on his push for health-care overhaul.
- One is AKPD Message and Media, the Chicago-based firm headed by David Axelrod until he left last Dec. 31 to serve as a senior adviser to the president. Axelrod was Obama’s top campaign strategist and is now helping sell the health-care plan. The other firm is Washington-based GMMB Campaign Group, where partner Jim Margolis was also an Obama strategist.
- This year, AKPD and GMMB received $12 million in advertising business from Healthy Economy Now, a coalition that includes the Washington-based Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America, known as PhRMA, that is seeking to build support for a health-care overhaul, said the coalition’s spokesman, Jeremy Van Ess.
You won’t be surprised to learn that the HEN coalition also includes left-wing Families USA, the sellouts at the AARP, and the
Purple Army at the SEIU.
DEMS TO PUSH “HEALTH CARE REFORM” THROUGH WITHOUT CONSENT OF PEOPLE OR REPUBLICANS from CNN
The Obama administration is looking hard at pushing through a health care reform bill without Republican backing, top Democrats close to the White House told CNN. The Democratic majority in the Senate has been stymied in the health care debate by Republicans and conservative Democrats, leaving them short of the 60-vote filibuster-proof margin needed to pass the bill. Democratic success could depend on an obscure tactic called reconciliation, a type of budget maneuver that requires only a simple majority — 51 votes — to pass. Going it alone could be risky for Democrats, not because they couldn’t raise the votes, but because Republicans could cast it as a power play, accusing them of failing to win bipartisan support. But it’s a fight Democrats might be willing to enter. “If we have to push it through this way, no one is going to remember how messy it was,” a top White House adviser told CNN. “At the end of the day, they’ll remember we got
health care reform done. A win is a win.” White House officials are beginning to lay the groundwork for such a move, telling CNN that they’ll have to take drastic measures if there’s no movement.
Healthcare in the UK and What it Foretells if Obamacare Becomes Reality from Humanevents.com
…The most compelling argument against having the government dishing out your aspirins comes from an analysis of basic economics. There is no such thing as universal free medical care. The money has to come from somewhere. The 2010 projected budget for the UK Department of Health will be £110 billion (roughly $187 billion US), most of which will go to pay for the NHS. The latest population figure for Great Britain is just over 60 million souls, of which 29 million are in the workforce. So each taxpayer is now paying roughly $6,450 per person for basic care, provided you meet certain age and pre-existing condition guidelines. Compare this with the leading complete-service private insurance program in England, BUPA, which charges $2,180 for an entire family. The government-run NHS charges 3 times more for a far inferior service. And it’s getting worse. These sums explain why the Conservative Party has not ruled out upping the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 20 percent should the next election turn out the tax and spend Labour Party. VAT (the national sales tax) is charged on most goods and service businesses in the UK. This is on top of the import duties for any foreign made products. In other words, VAT is like always tipping your ‘waitperson’ 20 percent on any dinner tab, no matter how bad the service is.
Opponents of Obamacare Screened Out of Poll on Healthcare by Helen Moore at AIP News
Late this afternoon I received a call from Harris Interactive. They were conducting a poll with women on HealthCare. The opening questions in any survey are qualifiers. One of the two qualifying questions made no sense. It lacked clarity and was perhaps the vaguest question I’ve ever seen in a questionnaire. However, in another way it was brilliantly Machiavellian.
The first qualifier was: Some people feel that people in Washington are out of touch with the rest of the country, do you agree with that statement? The obvious response is YES, I agree.
The second qualifier was: Some people feel they are left out of everything around them, do you agree with that statement?
I had no idea what it meant or what it referred to, therefore, I could not respond. The young man called his supervisor. He was told if I could not respond, the interview would have to be terminated. I wanted to hear the questions in the survey so I told him to record NO as my response.
The next questions were demographic questions, that is, where do you live, what is your education level, what is your income level, etc. These questions always occur at the end of a survey. I asked what had happened to the questions on healthcare. He replied my response to one of the qualifiers generated a skip pattern and so the questions on healthcare were skipped. The survey was skewed to disqualify anyone who would likely provide negative responses on Obamacare. It was the most blatant manipulation of polling results I’ve ever seen. Be prepared to see news stories in the near future flouting poll numbers claiming there is greater support for Obamacare among the general public than is thought based on media coverage of town hall meetings (or something to that effect ). Dismiss those stories with a ton of salt. Obviously this poll was sponsored either by the White House or some organization in favor of Obamacare. They were looking specifically for people who see themselves as victims and further victimizing those people by using them as ploys to further the current administration’s grab for government control of citizens lives.
Small Ray of Hope for The Government (in Michigan anyway) from Campaign for Liberty
Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the rule of law is dead. Our Founders understood that it would fall to the will of the people to hold their elected representatives to the letter of the law, namely the Constitution. Tuesday, during a Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing, a well informed group of citizen patriots made their will known in concise, humble, but realistic terms. They reminded members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that their sworn oaths to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the Sovereign State of Michigan and its citizens is Job #1. Citizens of Michigan filled the chamber as the Judiciary Committee heard testimony in favor of SCR004/SR17, which reaffirms Michigan’s Sovereignty Under the 10th Amendment. During opening statements, Senator Patterson and several other committee members stated that in their entire careers of public service, they had never experienced such a display of public support for a Resolution. Patterson’s comments were punctuated with the brandishing of heavy stacks of personal petitions of support from “the People”, collected and hand-carried to his Lansing office by C4L members. “To ignore the will of the people with a no vote”, he stated, “was tantamount to violating the oath sworn by each of us upon entering public office”. At the conclusion of the hearing, the Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to report SCR004/SR17 out of committee, with recommendation for approval. The issue will now go to the full Senate for debate and vote. A similar resolution HCR004, introduced by Representative Paul Opsommer, has been bogged down in the House Government Operations Committee, with no schedule for hearing. A little taste of Campaign for Liberty-style citizen activism may just do the trick. It appears that the people of Michigan have finally awakened to the abuse of power being visited upon us by our out-of-control Federal Government. Our last best hope may lie with the reassertion of State and individual sovereignty. Nullification of unconstitutional federal law has always been the pervue of State Legislatures, and the people through the jury process.
